Breeds  



There are two main categories to the cavy breed; selfs and non-selfs. Selfs are one-colour short hairs. All whose coat consists of a combination of the Self-colours and/or is styled are Non-Selfs. Many cavies are offspring to parents of different breeds so these are cross breeds. Here are the most common categories:

English Crested
Short, smooth hair with single rosette on head
American Crested
Short, smooth hair with single white rosette on head
Alpaca
All over long, rough hair
Dutch
Short, smooth coloured hair with white band around belly, along nose, chin and neck
Dalmation
Short, smooth white hair dappled with colour spots
Himalayan
Short, smooth white hair with dark coloured nose, ears and feet
Roan
Short, smooth coloured hair evenly mingled with white
Agouti
Smooth speckled looking hair
Coronet
Long smooth hair, short on head with single rosette
Rex
Short, rough hair
Abyssinian
Short hairs patterned in rosettes
Peruvian
All over long smooth hair
Sheltie
Long smooth hair, short on head
Texel
Long rough hair, short on head
Tricolour
Short, smooth hair in three colours
Tortoiseshell
Short, smooth, chequered black and red hair
Tortoiseshell + White
Short, smooth, chequered black, red and white hair
Merino
Long, rough hair, short on head with single rosette



Hairless Cavies

Baldwin
Pigs that lose all of their hair and become completely bald from young age.
Skinny Pigs
Bald variety of cavy with exception of light hair on the head and feet.
